This is a hands-on mechanical design role for someone who wants to own the bridge between engineering and manufacturing. You'll design LED lighting products—commercial fixtures, residential lamps, industrial lighting, and custom solutions—using SolidWorks and AutoCAD, while working closely with production to ensure designs are manufacturable, cost-effective, and ship-ready. This isn't a pure CAD seat; you'll prototype fast, solve real production challenges, and grow into leadership as the company scales.

What We're Really Looking For
This role demands someone who executes with precision and discipline (The Operator)—hitting timelines, maintaining documentation rigor, and ensuring manufacturability—while also having the growth ambition and ownership mentality of The Builder. Day-to-day, you'll be methodically translating design requirements into production-ready drawings, troubleshooting fabrication issues on the shop floor, and progressively taking on more responsibility as you prove your ability to own outcomes, not just tasks.
- Manufacturing empathy—visceral understanding of what happens when designs hit the shop floor — Candidates who've only done design in isolation create beautiful CAD models that are nightmares to fabricate, assemble, or cost-optimize. Manufacturing empathy means you've felt the pain of a design that doesn't account for tooling constraints, and you proactively design to minimize that friction—directly impacting production efficiency and cost.
- Pace resilience—ability to maintain quality under compressed manufacturing timelines without burnout — The employer explicitly cited 'can't handle the pace of manufacturing timelines' as the top reason engineers fail or leave. This isn't about working long hours—it's about maintaining composure, quality, and decision-making speed when deadlines compress and priorities shift daily, which is the reality of manufacturing environments.
- Relocation authenticity—genuine readiness to move near the factory, not just interview lip service — The employer has been burned by candidates who say they'll relocate, then resign after a few weeks. This wastes onboarding investment and disrupts team momentum. Relocation commitment is non-negotiable for this role because daily shop-floor collaboration is core to success.
Why Join Us
You'll get ownership from day one—this isn't a task-execution role where you wait for instructions. We're looking for someone who wants to learn, lead, and grow with the company as we scale, with a clear path from individual contributor to leadership. You'll work across the full product lifecycle, from concept sketches to seeing your designs in the market, with daily exposure to manufacturing, prototyping, and cross-functional problem-solving. If you want real impact, hands-on variety, and a company that invests in your growth trajectory, this is the place.
Qualifications
Must have
- ◆1.5–3 years of experience in mechanical design or drafting, ideally in lighting, consumer products, or manufacturing
- ◆Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering or relevant field
- ◆Willingness to relocate near the factory location (non-negotiable)
- ◆Demonstrated ability to work in fast-paced manufacturing environments with tight production timelines
Preferred
- ◆Prior experience in LED lighting or electrical product design
- ◆Exposure to prototype fabrication and testing cycles
- ◆Understanding of cost engineering and value analysis in design
Technical Skills
Must have
- ◆Proficiency in SolidWorks for 3D modeling and assembly design
- ◆Proficiency in AutoCAD for 2D technical drawings and documentation
- ◆Strong sheet metal design skills (stamping, bending, forming processes)
- ◆Surface modeling capabilities for complex geometries
- ◆Understanding of fabrication, machining, and assembly processes
- ◆Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles
- ◆Technical drawing standards, GD&T, and tolerance analysis
- ◆Version control and engineering change management
Optional
- ◆Thermal analysis for LED heat dissipation
- ◆Optical design principles for lighting products
- ◆Experience with rapid prototyping methods (3D printing, CNC)
- ◆Knowledge of electrical enclosures and safety standards for lighting products
Who You Are
- ◆Detail-obsessed with disciplined documentation habits—understands small design mistakes become production nightmares
- ◆Strong cross-functional communicator who translates between design intent and shop floor reality
- ◆Proactive problem-solver who proposes fixes, not just flags issues
- ◆Comfortable with manufacturing pace and tight timelines—thrives under pressure rather than wilts
- ◆Takes ownership of end-to-end design outcomes, not just task completion
- ◆Collaborative mindset with production teams—engages with the shop floor daily, not siloed in CAD
- ◆Adaptable to rapid iteration based on customer feedback and engineering changes
- ◆Growth-oriented with leadership ambition—wants to learn and lead as the company scales
